Needlepoint is a fun, beginner-friendly and very approachable hobby. It appeals to some for its rhythm and others in its ability to calm, while others prefer the satisfaction of the end result. For whatever motivation you have to needlepoint, this guide will help you begin stitching.
What Is Needlepoint?
Needlepoint is a form of canvas embroidery where you stitch thread through an open-weave canvas to create a design. Unlike free-form embroidery, needlepoint uses a structured grid canvas, which makes it very forgiving for beginners.
What You Need to Start Needlepoint
The beauty of needlepoint is that you don't need much to begin. Here are the four essentials:
1. Needlepoint canvas: The printed grid that carries your design. Many beginners start with a canvas like ours where the colors guide your thread choices. Our standard canvas is size-13, with the "13" indicating how many holes there are in a linear inch.
2. Tapestry needle: A blunt, large-eye needle that slides through the canvas weave without splitting it. Our kits include a size-20 tapestry needle that works well for size-13 canvas.
3. Needlepoint thread: Our kits include cotton embroidery thread. There are many types of thread that can be used such as silk, wool, and thicker cotton.
4. Optional: Stretcher bars: helpful for keeping your canvas taut and your stitches even.

Basic Needlepoint Stitches for Beginners
You only need to know one stitch to complete most needlepoint projects:
The Continental Stitch
The Continental Stitch is the foundation of needlepoint. Each stitch covers one intersection of canvas threads diagonally, creating a smooth, even texture. The Continental is a great stitch for outlining and working in rows. The needle travels under two canvas threads horizontally on the back. It is the simplest and easiest stitch to learn.
Choosing Your First Needlepoint Project
The key to a great first project is choosing something that's manageable and motivating. Here's what to look for:
1. Time Investment: How much time do you want to spend stitching? Shorter projects range from 2-3 hours for kits sized 2x3 and 2x2. 4x4 kits can take 6-8 hours. 4x6 kits can often take 12+ hours.
2. Stitching confidence: How confident are you in your stitching abilities? Different designs have different difficulties. These difficulties are often determined by number of colors and level of detail. Easier design collections include Greek Life, National Parks, and USA. Harder collections include Chinoiserie as well as many location designs such as Charleston and Savannah.

Tips for Getting Started
1. Cut thread to 18 inches or less. Longer thread tangles and wears thin as you pull it through the canvas repeatedly.
2. Work in good lighting. Needlepoint requires you to see the canvas holes clearly, so natural light or a daylight lamp makes a big difference. I would also recommend working on a light colored surface or on top of a piece of blank white paper to let the colors really pop.
3. Keep tension consistent. Pull each stitch snug but not tight. Overly tight stitches can distort the canvas and make the stitches look inconsistent.
4. If you make a mistake, do not panic. Mistakes can be fixed by using your needle to retrace your steps. I would heavily advise against trying to cut the thread out of the canvas.
5. Relax. This is a calming hobby and you will find your enjoyment increases the more you relax.
